Business Energy solutions for sustainable overhead cost management

Category : Better business

Introducing you to SSE Protect and budget certainty for business customers.

Now that I’m back in the office after the festive break, I find myself reflecting on what was an eventful and exciting 2017. Over the last 12 months’ industry commentators have bombarded us with messages telling us that the UK energy industry is going through a period of immense change. It undoubtedly is, and this change isn’t just felt by the industry, our customers are feeling it too.

These changing times have led to some new and challenging customer conversations. Time and time again customers tell me how important it is for them to keep a tight control on their operational overheads, so they can drive operational efficiency and maximise their margins.

This is no surprise as it is simply good business practice, and as a responsible energy supplier we provide our customers with the tools to manage their energy usage. Discussions range from how we can enhance their pre-existing analytics, to how we can deliver a foundation to build on as we move into a new Smart world. Personally, I’m relishing the fact discussions are moving beyond the supply contract, as it allows me to work with a variety of stakeholders as we collaborate on the right solution.

I am a proud advocate of our energy optimisation services as a means of stopping energy usage and costs spiralling out of control. Working with SSE Enterprise Energy Solutions has meant we’ve been able to pull together some very compelling propositions for our customers over the last 12 months (please contact me if you want to hear more about this).

Despite this, during 2017 it became clear from customer feedback that focusing on optimisation services alone was no longer enough. While energy efficiency can help avoid or reduce costs, non-commodities are a continual exposure to manage.

Today 50-60% of a customer’s energy bill is made up of non-commodity costs, and our forecasts predict further increases as the UK moves towards a more intermittent renewable generation portfolio. Learn more by downloading our industry guide here.

As a supplier, we have no control over non-commodity costs and as a customer they are difficult to predict. For example, key changes over the last 18 months were the T-1 auction being brought forward by a year for the capacity mechanism, black start coming out of the balancing costs and the new charging methodology for unidentified gas, to name a few!

So, the question becomes, how do I as an account manager with SSE Business Energy give our customers budget certainty so they can accurately plan for the year ahead?

Introducing SSE Protect. This tariff provides budget certainty for our business customers as it guarantees a fully fixed price – if non-commodity costs increase during the life of the contract, it means the price our customers pay will not change. This is true whether the contract is for one or three years.

As 2018 progresses, I’m looking forward to speaking with all my customers about how SSE Protect and our energy optimisation services can help them deliver their energy strategy in 2018 and beyond.

I know things don’t stay still for long and for sure there is more change coming. Please feel free to drop me a line on what you think your energy challenges are, or note them in the comments section.

At SSE Business Energy, we endeavour to shape our products and services to our customers’ needs and to help them navigate these inevitable changes.
